How the World’s Biggest Plane Would Supersize Wind Energy
Electricity usage is surging because of the electrification of transportation and heating across much of the U.S., plus booms in manufacturing and in data centers for artificial intelligence.“They also want clean electricity,” Moniz said.
Navigating Arkansas’ Energy Landscape: Solar Grows, Nuclear Shines
“You’re going to see a lot more solar in places that haven’t had it” in the near future, Hasten said, noting that 60,000 megawatts of coal generation are set to retire nationwide in the next four years. That’s enough juice to power maybe 30 million typical homes. “Under the Inflation Reduction Act and the bipartisan infrastructure law, a lot of that capacity will be replaced by renewable energy.”
Louisiana Utility Plans $411M Floating Gas Plant
Louisiana’s largest electric utility is seeking state approval for an unusual plan to help keep the lights on: a floating natural gas power station. Entergy Louisiana has filed a request with the Louisiana Public Service Commission to construct a 112-megawatt power plant on a barge near Leeville, Louisiana, southwest of New Orleans.
US Grants $750 Million for Hydrogen Projects Across 24 States
The grants will help lay the groundwork for the administration’s $7 billion hydrogen hub program, funding of which was also included in the 2021 bipartisan legislation. The administration announced last October seven hubs in 16 states will share the grants in an effort to spur the industry.Satyapal said the projects should help the U.S. boost its electrolyzer capacity from a couple of gigawatts per year to 10 GW, enough to produce 1.3 million tonnes of clean hydrogen annually.
Utah Legislation Preserves Rural Jobs While Securing Utah’s Energy Future
S.B. 161 creates the Decommissioned Asset Disposition Authority within the Office of Energy Development to evaluate how to keep IPPs existing electrical generation facilities open without harming plans for a new natural gas plant. The authority must submit an alternative air permit application, determine the existing plant’s fair market value and consider offers to purchase it. The bill does not halt IPP’s development of a natural gas power facility; instead, it creates a path to utilize both traditional and natural resources.
